Braided Gland Packing Industry knowledge

Gansu Juxiang Fluoroplastics Technology Co.,Ltd. produces Braided Gland Packing manufacturer output within a wider fluoroplastic and high-performance engineering plastics programme run across two production bases in Zhejiang and Gansu. The range covers fifteen constructions: pure and lubricated PTFE, PTFE filament, aramid and carbon fibre braids dipped in PTFE dispersion, and flexible graphite braids with and without Inconel wire reinforcement. Packing leaves the plant as square-section braid on spools or cut to the lengths required for pump and valve stuffing boxes.

Because the same operation extrudes and moulds PTFE sheet, rod, tube and machined seals, a gland packing requirement can be consolidated with the flange gaskets, thread seal tape and custom components that belong to the same maintenance package — one dimensional check, one material declaration, one shipment.

Our Position in the Braided Gland Packing Range

We build the range around the two failure modes that dominate stuffing box service: chemical attack on the yarn and mechanical loss of volume under gland load. PTFE-based constructions answer the first; corner-reinforced and wire-reinforced constructions answer the second. The four families below are stocked as standard model codes and can be adjusted in cross-section, braid density and lubricant content against a drawing or a physical sample.

  • PTFE family — pure PTFE (952), lubricated PTFE (953) and PTFE filament (955) for chemical, food, pharmaceutical and water services where inertness matters more than pressure.
  • Fibre-reinforced PTFE family — aramid, carbon fibre and graphite-filled PTFE braids (954, 956, 957, 958, 959) for higher shaft speeds and abrasive slurries.
  • Flexible graphite family — 960 for steam, thermal oil and high-temperature flue duty without wire.
  • Reinforced graphite family — 961 to 964 with Inconel wire or glass fibre, for high-pressure steam, soot blower and valve stem duty where extrusion resistance governs.

Working Envelope by Construction

Model Construction Temperature (°C) Max pressure (bar)

JUXIANG-952 Pure PTFE -200 to 280 150
JUXIANG-953 PTFE with lubricant -200 to 280 150
JUXIANG-954 PTFE with aramid corners -100 to 280 200
JUXIANG-955 PTFE filament -200 to 280 250
JUXIANG-956 PTFE with graphite -200 to 280 200
JUXIANG-957 PTFE, graphite, aramid corners -100 to 280 250
JUXIANG-958 Aramid fibre, PTFE-dipped -100 to 280 250
JUXIANG-959 Carbon fibre, PTFE-dipped -50 to 260 150
JUXIANG-960 Flexible graphite -250 to 650 250
JUXIANG-961 Graphite, glass fibre and Inconel wire -250 to 650 250
JUXIANG-962 Graphite, Inconel wire mesh -250 to 650 500
JUXIANG-963 Graphite, Inconel wire -250 to 650 300
JUXIANG-964 Graphite with carbon fibre corners -250 to 650 400

Pressure and temperature figures are independent limits for each construction, not simultaneous ratings. A 650 °C graphite braid does not carry 500 bar at that temperature, and a 500 bar wire-reinforced braid is specified for saturated steam well below its upper thermal limit. We size against the actual combination of pressure, temperature, shaft speed and medium.

Application Fit Across Rotating and Static Equipment

Gland packing remains the practical choice wherever a stuffing box already exists, where access for a mechanical seal is limited, or where the process tolerates a controlled weep. Our constructions map onto the equipment types below.

  • Centrifugal and reciprocating pumps — 952 and 953 for dilute acids, caustics, brine and solvent service; 958 and 959 where shaft speed and solids rule out pure PTFE.
  • Valve stems and bonnets — 956, 957 and 964 for steam and hydrocarbon valves; 962 where high-pressure steam demands wire-reinforced extrusion resistance.
  • Agitators, mixers and autoclaves — 954 and 957 with aramid corners for combined chemical and mechanical load.
  • Steam and thermal fluid systems — 960 to 963, including soot blower and boiler house duty.
  • Marine and offshore — graphite and PTFE-hybrid braids for stern gland and deck machinery applications where seawater ingress is routine.

Where a specification still calls for asbestos (950), we supply it against a documented legacy requirement. For new projects we recommend the non-asbestos equivalents — 958, 959 or 960 — which cover the same temperature band without the handling restrictions.

Configuration Choices We Confirm Before Production

Braided packing is a dimensional product as much as a material one. A 0.5 mm error in cross-section shows up as gland follow-up within a shift, so the configuration conversation is short and specific.

  • Nominal square cross-section and tolerance, matched to the measured stuffing box depth and stem diameter.
  • Braid structure — square braid, interlock braid or corner-reinforced construction for high-pressure stems.
  • Lubricant type and content, including silicone-free and graphite-free variants for oxygen, food and semiconductor-adjacent service.
  • Spool length, cut-ring sets, or pre-formed die-moulded rings for valves where spiral wrapping is impractical.
  • Endless ring supply with staggered joint marking for pumps that cannot be repacked on site.
  • Colour coding or printed model identification on the spool for stores control.

Installation, Gland Hardware and Run-In

Packing performance is decided as much by the box as by the braid. We ask for stem or shaft finish, box bore condition, lantern ring position and gland bolt condition before recommending a construction, because a scored shaft will destroy a graphite braid as quickly as an abrasive slurry.

  • Stem and shaft surfaces are best between 0.4 and 0.8 µm Ra for PTFE braids, with a slight hardness advantage on stainless and duplex stems.
  • Ring joints are staggered 90° and each ring is seated individually; gland load is applied progressively, not in one pass.
  • Lantern rings must align with the flush port, and cooling or quench flow is set before the equipment is loaded.
  • A run-in period of controlled leakage prevents thermal runaway on graphite braids and allows PTFE braids to consolidate.

Quality Checks and Acceptance

Each batch is checked for cross-section, braid tightness and yarn composition against the approved specification, and the model code is recorded on the spool and the packing list so the material can be traced back to its production run. Where a project requires a material declaration, dimensional report or third-party inspection, that requirement is agreed at quotation stage and included in the delivery documentation rather than added after shipment.

Information We Use to Configure Your Solution

We prepare a proposal from the working point, not from a catalogue page. The following inputs let us select a construction and quote a firm scope in one pass.

  • Equipment type, model and stuffing box drawing, or measured box bore, stem diameter and depth.
  • Medium, concentration and the presence of solids or abrasives.
  • Operating pressure, operating temperature and any upset or steam-out conditions.
  • Shaft speed, runout and the acceptable leakage rate.
  • Quantity as spool metres, ring sets or annual consumption, with the delivery schedule.
  • Documentation, inspection and packaging requirements, plus the destination port or site.

Companion items are quoted alongside the packing where the same shutdown covers them — Expanded PTFE Reinforced Flange Gasket sets for the adjacent flange joints, and the wider fluoroplastic product range for machined seals, sheets and tubes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which construction suits a chemical pump handling 30% caustic at 90 °C?

Lubricated PTFE (953) or PTFE filament (955) is the usual starting point: both are chemically inert across the caustic range and stay within their thermal envelope at 90 °C. If the pump runs at high shaft speed or the box is difficult to access, aramid-cornered 954 gives better volume retention and longer repack intervals. We confirm the choice against shaft speed and box condition.

Can you supply packing cut to ring size rather than on a spool?

Yes. We supply spools, cut lengths and pre-formed ring sets, including die-moulded rings for valve bonnets where spiral wrapping cannot be seated properly. Ring sets are supplied with the joint position marked and the model code printed on each bag.

What is the difference between 961, 962 and 963?

All three are flexible graphite braids with Inconel reinforcement; the difference is the reinforcement format and the resulting pressure capability. 962 uses Inconel wire mesh and carries the highest rating at 500 bar, 963 uses Inconel wire at 300 bar, and 961 combines glass fibre with Inconel wire at 250 bar. Selection follows the steam pressure and the risk of extrusion at the gland clearance.

How quickly can we get a technical response and a quotation?

Inquiries are answered within 12 working hours. A complete quotation needs the stuffing box dimensions, medium, pressure, temperature and quantity; where those are supplied with the first message, the construction recommendation and price usually go back together.
